What kind of organizations do you work with?
We work primarily with small and mid-sized nonprofits that are falling short of their potential due to infighting, turnover, weak leadership, and/or poor overall inter-staff relations.
What is the process?
The process varies depending on the organization, but generally consists of a variety of methods, including but not limited to all-staff meetings, 1:1 conversations, content analyses of internal communications, surveys, focus groups, and the consultant’s own observations.
What methods do you use?
Methods will vary, but will usually include a combination of surveys, interviews, focus groups, content analysis, and observation.
What do you do with the info you gather?
All data is used specifically and exclusively in the development of a dedicated proposal, report, and set of recommendations. Staff responses are kept strictly confidential, including from leadership and all organizational stakeholders. We do not collect personally identifying information or share identifying data with any other individual or entity, though we may reference either in non-identifying ways. Nontoxic Nonprofits retains ownership of all raw data and all research tools used in the execution of a contract.
How do we know if our nonprofit has a toxic culture?
If your team is experiencing high turnover, low morale, frequent miscommunication, or burnout – you’re likely facing a cultural breakdown. Our Culture Checkup is a one-time, affordable option to assess the overall health of your workplace culture. It helps you identify whether deeper interventions are needed.
Can we test your services before committing to a bigger engagement?
Yes. Many organizations start with our A la Carte Services, such as a Facilitated Team Discussion or Leadership & Staff Communication Training, to address one area before deciding on a comprehensive package. It’s a smart way to experience how we work.
What happens during the assessment or observation phase?
We quietly observe internal meetings, review communication patterns, and gather feedback through surveys or conversations. This helps us understand your culture beneath the surface, not just what’s written in your handbook. Our approach is non-disruptive and designed to build trust.
Is the information you collect kept confidential?
Absolutely. All proprietary assessments and internal feedback tools are administered anonymously. Findings are shared with leadership in a confidential briefing and do not identify individuals unless explicit permission is given.
Do we get a report or deliverables from your services?
Yes. Every engagement includes a comprehensive report with tailored recommendations. These reports serve as your roadmap for implementing changes and improving internal communication and culture.
Can we share the success of our work with you on social media?
Yes. Many clients use the cultural wins and measurable improvements from our engagement as part of their storytelling – especially when applying for funding or recruiting talent. We’re happy to help you frame this success in a way that honors staff privacy while showcasing growth.
What if we don’t have a clear internal communication system?
That’s common – and fixable. Our Internal Communication Strategy Development service helps you create structure, clarity, and consistency around how your teams communicate, make decisions, and share information.
We already have an internal communication strategy. Can you review and improve it?
Yes. As part of our Internal Communication Strategy Development (A la Carte or in package form), we can review your current strategy, identify what’s working, and offer targeted improvements to increase alignment and clarity.
Our board and leadership team aren't aligned, and it’s creating conflict. Do you help with that?
Yes. Our Meeting Strategy for Board or Leadership Conflict (A la Carte) is built to reduce friction. We facilitate purpose-driven sessions to align expectations, clarify roles, and strengthen trust between your board and leadership.
